DESCRIPTION:Teenflight build session: \nVan will not attend this week.  Dan Benua will oversee this session. There is a lot of work lined up with the fuselage side skins being ready to rivet and other associated work.  The fuel tank is essentially ready to seal and rivet.  The empennage kit has been unloaded into the back room\, which needs to be un-packed\, inventoried\, and shelved.  That will take a quite a bit of time and if possible\, should involve a team that had not yet participated in the inventory exercise. \nTed Millar may attend to give an inspirational talk on how GA planes can be used to complement other business operations and occupations. \nWe might also talk more about tool use and tool safety.  The Bandsaw use and drill press are possibilities.  Caution regarding long hair around power tools may not yet have been stressed enough.

DESCRIPTION:TeenFlight™ build session. \nThere were so many suggestions about improving the TeenFlight™ logo last week that I’d like to give everyone the SVG file for each of you to play with and create a layout\, print\, and bring to the next build session. I suggest you use InkScape to edit the file. InkScape is free and has a Help pulldown menu to learn how to use it. This SVG file has a layer for each component. The components can be scaled\, moved\, and the color can be changed. Each entity has an outline color and a fill color. For example\, there is a layer that has TeenFlight™ HIO text and a different layer with only TeenFlight™. You can make layers visible or not visible\, so you’ll pick one or the other to be visible\, and you change the text’s color\, scale\, and location. If you haven’t worked with vector graphics before\, this is a great way to learn how. I look forward to seeing the different versions everyone comes up with. DESCRIPTION:Last week we made good progress on the stabilator\, tail cone\, and fuel tank.  We should be able to do final work on the tank this week.  Wing construction has been started consisting mainly of parts prep work. \nWith luck we will have the new fuel pump accessories this week and can rework the pump mounts and many of the new fuel lines. \nThe weekend of May 16-17 is the HIO Airshow.  So\, no class on the 16th.  This show provides an opportunity to display our airplane\, in-process kit\, or both.  Last year we displayed our almost finished TF-9 plane and it was well received.  The AirShow folks also are expanding their “Kids day” on Friday preceding the airshow itself.  We were surprised at the number of school kids that had been bussed in for this event.  Let’s talk about this event and see how much interest and support we might have for this.

DESCRIPTION:Last Saturday we did well on most projects\, but did experience a costly mistake in one area.  We can’t turn the clock back and remedy this mistake\, but I hope we can lean from it.  We will talk about this a bit at class. \nWe’ve got plenty to do this Saturday with the fuel system revision kit.  This involves fabricating a lot of new aluminum fuel lines and replacing some fuel pump mounting brackets on the baggage bulkhead. \nWe also will probably be able to finish the fuel tank assy. this week. \nWe will be missing three mentors this Saturday as they will be away at a formation flying clinic.  Maybe at some future class we can have a talk on formation flying. \nSee you on Saturday.

Hopefully most of the other mentors are able to attend. \nLast Saturday we slowed down the wing skinning process a bit so that internal work on the wiring and stall warning could be done more easily.  This is basically done now so the skin application may proceed.  Depending on the number of students in attendance\, two teams can probably work on this. \nThe two teams working on the flaperons need to ensure that these components are truly complete before setting them aside. \nTwo teams can begin work on Finishing kit chapters.  The Flight controls section may have been delegated to Jim Frisbie’s team. \nParts back orders prevent  working on the canopy and landing gears sections.  So\, one team can begin work on the cowling.  This would be very preliminary work\, but needs to be done at some time. Back-ordered parts should arrive soon. \nWe need to check that the internal threads of the WD1216 Rod Assembly (for in the flight controls) are clean before attempting final assembly and installation.

DESCRIPTION:This is the this second-to-last work session of this season.  Wow!  The year went by fast.   \nWe should have the back ordered parts for the Finishing Kit.  Too late in the season to make much progress on this kit\, but at least we can complete our inventory and be ready to move forward in September. \nSince this is the first Saturday of the month\, it’s Pancake and Grits time at Twin Oaks airport.  Thus\, our class will begin at 10 AM rather than the usual 9 AM.  So\, see you at 10 AM.
